This simulation shows the preferential heating and removal of water (blue) and kerogen (black). The rock matrix is not removed and microwaves pass through.
The phase boundary is moving through the rock and heating the shale is a narrow band. The antenna gain can be adjusted which leads to broad or narrow heating.
